Introduction
Using two Canon 430EX III-RT Speedlites in wireless radio mode allows you to create professional lighting setups without additional triggers or cables. However, there’s a common issue: pressing the test button won’t confirm that both flashes are firing simultaneously—you must press the shutter button to properly check synchronization.
This guide ensures a flawless setup and includes troubleshooting steps if your second flash isn’t firing correctly.
📌 What You Need
- 1x Canon 430EX III-RT (Master Flash)
- 1x (or more) Canon 430EX III-RT (Slave Flash)
- 1x Canon Camera with RT Flash Compatibility (e.g., Canon R5)
- Fully charged AA batteries (NiMH recommended, e.g., Eneloop Pro)
🔹 Step 1: Insert Fresh Batteries and Turn On Both Flashes
1️⃣ Ensure both flashes have fully charged batteries.
2️⃣ Turn on both flashes using the Power switch.
🚨 Important: A low battery in either flash may cause slow recycling or syncing issues. If your second flash is delayed or not firing, check battery levels first.
🔹 Step 2: Set the On-Camera Flash to Master Mode
The on-camera flash must be set as the Master before the second flash can sync as a Slave.
1️⃣ Attach the first flash to the camera’s hot shoe.
2️⃣ Turn on the flash and press the Wireless Button ().
3️⃣ Rotate the Select Dial (<9>) until you see the Master Mode (<M>) with the 🔗 link icon.
4️⃣ Press SET (<8>) to confirm.
✅ Your first flash is now the Master and will control the second flash wirelessly.
🔹 Step 3: Set the Second Flash to Slave Mode
1️⃣ Turn on the off-camera flash (Slave flash).
2️⃣ Press the Wireless Button ().
3️⃣ Rotate the Select Dial (<9>) until you see Slave Mode (<x>) with the 🔗 link icon.
4️⃣ Press SET (<8>) to confirm.
✅ Your second flash is now in Slave mode and will be triggered wirelessly.
🔹 Step 4: Set the Same Wireless Channel and Radio ID
Both flashes must communicate on the same channel and radio ID.
1️⃣ On both flashes, press the Flash Menu Button (<8>).
2️⃣ Navigate to Wireless Settings → Channel (Ch).
3️⃣ Select the same Channel (e.g., Ch 1) on both flashes.
4️⃣ Navigate to Wireless Radio ID and set the same 4-digit ID (e.g., 1234) on both flashes.
5️⃣ Press SET (<8>) to confirm.
✅ Now both flashes are communicating on the same wireless network.
🔹 Step 5: Enable Flash Firing on the Master
By default, the Master flash might be set to trigger the Slave but not fire itself. Here’s how to fix that:
1️⃣ On the Master Flash (on-camera flash), press <8>.
2️⃣ Navigate to Flash Firing Settings (Lightning Bolt Icon).
3️⃣ Set it to “ON” (j) and press SET (<8>).
✅ Now the Master flash will fire along with the Slave.
🔹 Step 6: Ensure the Slave Flash Fires Instantly (Fixing Delay Issues)
If the Slave flash fires late (1-second delay), this is usually because Linked Shot Mode is enabled or Groups are mismatched.
✅ Disable Linked Shot Mode
1️⃣ On the Slave Flash, press and hold the Wireless Button ().
2️⃣ If the screen shows “Linked Shot”, disable it by switching back to Slave Mode (<‘x>).
3️⃣ Press SET (<8>) to confirm.
✅ Now, your Slave flash should fire instantly.
✅ Set Both Flashes to the Same Group
1️⃣ On the Master Flash, press <8> and navigate to Firing Group Control.
2️⃣ Set both flashes to Group A (or the same group).
3️⃣ Press SET (<8>) to confirm.
✅ This ensures that both flashes fire at the same time.
🔹 Step 7: Test the Wireless Flash Sync Properly
🚨 Important: Pressing the TEST button on the Master flash does NOT confirm that the Slave is firing in sync!
Instead, you MUST press the camera shutter button to properly check that both flashes fire together.
✅ How to Test Sync Properly
1️⃣ Set your camera to Manual Mode (M).
2️⃣ Set your settings to ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/200s.
3️⃣ Half-press the shutter—both flashes should show READY.
4️⃣ Press the shutter button fully to take a photo.
5️⃣ Review the image and confirm that both flashes fired simultaneously.
✅ If both flashes fire in sync, your setup is complete!
🔹 Troubleshooting (If the Second Flash Doesn’t Fire)
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Slave flash doesn’t fire at all | 🔹 Check that both flashes are in Radio Transmission Mode (<x> for Slave, <M> for Master). 🔹 Confirm they are on the same Channel & Radio ID. 🔹 Ensure the Master flash is attached to the camera. |
| Slave flash fires late | 🔹 Disable Linked Shot Mode on the Slave flash. 🔹 Set both flashes to the same Group (Group A). |
| Test button fires one flash but not both | 🔹 Press the shutter button, not the test button, to properly check synchronization. |
| Flashes recycle too slowly | 🔹 Use fresh, fully charged NiMH batteries (e.g., Eneloop Pro 2500mAh). 🔹 Lower flash power (e.g., 1/8 instead of full power) to improve recycling. |
📌 Summary:
✔ Master Flash on-camera, Slave Flash off-camera
✔ Both set to Radio Transmission Mode (<M> and <x>)
✔ Same Channel & Radio ID
✔ Both in the same Group (e.g., Group A)
✔ Flash Firing ON (Master & Slave)
✔ MUST Press the Shutter Button to Test Properly!
Now you’re all set to capture professional lighting setups with Canon 430EX III-RT Speedlites! 🚀
